25,000 West Virginia turkeys have just been destroyed after testing positive for exposure to bird flu.
I wonder if killing all the exposed birds is the best option.
Why is it better than quarantining the population and letting the virus kill most of them, thereby essentially breeding for resistance? In the event a few birds survived, they would have anti-bird-flu antibodies for serum and be good breeding stock for the future.
What am I missing?

One thing: what if the disease somehow jumps from the infected flock and gets into the general populace?
