Actually, the "sad girl in snow" meme was created in response to Kanon, and brought to popularity by Megatokyo, sometime in 2001.

By the way, I'm afraid I didn't actually take the photo of Makoto in the snow. My stepfather, Ph.Duck, was the duck behind the camera.
