Robert Zubrin of Mars Direct fame has put forth a proposal for the new CEV / CXV project here. He wants a smaller, 4-man, vehicle and hopes for the manned moon and Mars missions to follow his Mars/Lunar direct profile.
It seems to me that although Dr. Zubrin is raising some good points, the increased crew capacity could be easily traded for additional life support when that is necessary.
