William Charles Bowser, the last of the heroes from the Pea Island Rescue Station has finally passed on.
The all black Pea Island Rescue Station was initially crewed by freedmen and earned a legendary reputation for courage and professionalism as they fought to save lives along the treacherous coast of North Carolinas Outer Banks. Their heroism did not end the discrimination they suffered , but they were much appreciated by those they saved and highly thought of on the Outer Banks.
No one should care about the color of the hand that pulls them from a cold and violent sea.
