There are reports (hat tip: Rand Simberg)that the craft suffered not only a control failure on the way up, but considerable damage upon reentry. The BBC is using the word "buckled" which would mean a one man Columbia was narrowly avoided, and either the design needs strengthening or the flight was out of envelope.
(Of course the BBC also used the word "massacre" to describe Jennin so we'll wait and see... but I digress)
Irregardless this is a BIG day!
