Toshiba is offering the village of Galena, Alaska a small 'inherently safe' nuclear reactor which will be able to power the town for 30 years with no diesel exhaust. here is the article and here is a closer look at the reactor.
This is really neat because the reactor has no moving parts to break. This is one way to decentralize the power grid.
